Menu types
Your online store comes with two default menus that are visible on every page: the main menu and the footer menu. You have the option to add, remove, or edit menu items within these default menus.
Main Menu:
The main menu is present on every page of your online store. It's typically displayed as items across the header's width or as a list in a sidebar. Customers usually use the main menu to navigate to your products and find information about your business, like an "About Us" page.
By default, your main menu includes two items:
- Home: Directs users to your online store's main page.
- Catalog: Leads to a page displaying all your products.
You can also create drop-down menus from any main menu item. These sub-menus are usually displayed as lists of items connected to the main menu item.
Footer Menu:
The footer menu is typically shown as items across the footer's width. Customers often refer to the footer menu to find information about your store policies and contact details.
General instruction on how to add menu items in your Online Store
To create a new menu in a Shopify theme, follow these steps:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Navigation.
- Click the “Add menu” button.
- Enter a name for your new menu.
- You can now add menu items to your new menu. To add a menu item, click the “Add menu item” button, enter a name for the menu item, and then enter the URL or select a page from the dropdown menu.
- If you want to create a submenu item, click and drag the menu item to the right. Repeat the process to create additional submenu items.
- If you selected a collection or all collections, then you can filter the collection with tags to display only the products that match all of the tags that you enter.
- If you selected a link type, then select a specific destination. When you select Home, the destination is automatically set to your online store's home page.
- Click Add to save your menu item.
- Click Save menu.
